Some say the Lulav is a Jewish Light Saber, and the Etrog is our Spiritual Grenade! ❤️ Some say the Lulav echos the Scepter and the Etrog the Orb, the two monarchical symbols that a King or Queen holds at a coronation. ❤️ Some say the Lulav is the Divine Masculine and the Etrog is the Divine Feminine; taken together, they represent the mystical reuniting of Ha Kadosh Baruch Hu and Shekhina, the masculine/feminine aspects of G*d. ❤️
Whatever way you like to think about them, our Lulav and Etrog are undoubtedly part of our Jewish esoteric tradition. When you "take" them in your hand and "shake" them in your Sukkah in the Six Directions (east, south, west, north, up and down), you're enacting powerful spiritual forces. 🍋🌿
The six directions echo our prayer, B'Shem HaShem:
B'sheim Hashem elohei yisrael, mimini Michael umismoli Gavriel, Umilfanai Uriel umeachorai Rafael, v'al roshi shechinat el
In the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, may Michael be at my right hand; Gabriel at my left; before me, Uriel; behind me, Raphael; and above my head the divine presence of God. 🌿🍋
But here you see only 5 directions: the Angel Michael to the right (east), Gavriel to the left (west), Uriel to the south, and Raphael to the north. Above the head is Shechinat El, the Divine Presence of the united male/female aspects of G*d. But who is the 6th direction, called "below"?
